3dsMax Mental Ray RTT Artifacts

Hey everybody,

I get the feeling this is a common problem but I haven't been able to find a useable solution online - 
When using Render To Texture in 3ds and Mental Ray I get these solid square block artifacts EVERYWHERE. The color of the blocks vary but match the general value of the texture they're obscuring.

I'm using 3ds Max 2011, Mental Ray, all Arch&Design materials, FG and GI, quite a few MR Area Omnis with a cylindrical area shape, an exterior skylight and a self illuminated A&D material. Render settings are mostly at low or medium settings, and RTT seems to be taking a ridiculous amount of time to render compared to a camera render of the same objects. Thinking there were too many light types I stripped it down to just the MR Omni lights, and then just the skylight - no luck, lots of little boxes. Also tried splitting the object up and rendering it in pieces, same problem.

Sorry guys it wasn’t a Mental Ray thing - there were actually tons of isolated vertices in the model that weren’t getting removed with “Remove Isolated Vertices” or “Remove unused map verts”. Render To Tex was showing them as squares scattered everywhere.
Anybody still reading have any idea what could have happened?
