Thank you for your reply, I did try cylindrical mapping but the UVs seemed very stretched, is there anything I should be doing after I’ve applied a cylindrical map to it.
Of course there is. You’ll need to adjust the uv layout in order to remove distortions.
When I try and flatten just one side of the body, there are many, many small separated pieces, which would take a while to restitch, is it normal practice to try restitch all these little pieces?
Don’t just flatten the whole side, I’d even use smaller parts, for instance segments of the hull, the rudder would be one or more two pieces.
After all, there’s no magic one button one click solution, even if videos about pelt mapping suggest this.

Think of unwrapping like it is wrapping a piece of paper(2D object) around an orange(3d object). Only the other way around.
