I use Cinema 4D and Zbrush I like to model buildings and structures. I can do almost anything except character models.

#22

Another possibility…can anyone tell me how to post thumbnails instead of the large pictures when linking from another site?

#23

The brute force way will be to store both the thumbnail and the full size image on your webspace and put html in the post here.

I think it looks like

<A HREF=http://www.yourpage.com/yourimage.jpg>
<IMG SRC=“www.yourpage.com/yourthumb.jpg”>
</A>

the image tag is in the link tag.

Something like that. The problem with someone who doesn’t know how to program, giving you programming instructions, is that programming is so unforgiving, you may end up having to learn it yourself somewhere else anyhow.

There are tons of basic html tutorials on line.

OH, and I like the revised view. I think we would be able to get some great detail out of the faces and characters that way with a good lighting setup. We could even get a lantern in the boat with them if we need it.

Sycar, Are you saying that you are just better at inorganic modelling, but might take a crack at character, or you prefer not to do characters?

All,

I was just trying to think of a way to divy up modelling work, once we get far enough to start doing that, and I realized that it seems kind of dictatorial for someone to just assign tasks. For example, if I divided up work, I’d likely try to save the male character for myself. So if I put my grumpy old man rocking chair on the front porch and talk about the good ole days, I think of university. When we were renting an apartpent, we often drummed up a competition to set the order of room chioce. Winner most often selected the master with the ensuite… then the other two rooms were usually kind of equal, but each with it’s own benefits. Similar to our situation here, I started to think of a competition for job choice. Online games came to mind. That, however presented a couple of problems. One, we’d have to find one that nobody had played before to make a level playing feild. Two, we’d have to find one that everyone owned; paradoxical huh?

I’m open to any other suggestions, or we can all just put in our first choice and hope that it just so happens that no two people choose the same thing?

I’m soliciting for opinions here.

If anyone knows a 2d artist that would like to do a couple of character concepts, we’d love to have them help us.

#26

yes i am better with inorganic but i might take a crack at a character but i dont have confedence in my ability to make organic characters yet…

The issue of modelling assignment has been nagging in my mind. I’ve started thinking that, in order to maintin the goal of a successful small, fast track project to completion, which is an exercise in scope management, maybe it would be best to assign artists according to their aptitudes. Sometimes the warm fuzzies get the best of me and I’m catering to people over projcet. I suppose the best solution is a middle ground somewhere.

Still looking for everyone’s thoughts.

#28

hmmm well i am cool with how ever u assign stuff.

#29

The way I understand it, we’re going with the 2nd rough for now, and we’re hoping for some help with the character sketches, is that right? I don’t know any 2d artists, so I’ll try coming up with some sketches for the characters to keep things rolling.

I agree that we have to take the middle ground somewhere between completing the project and pleasing everyone involved. I think it’s great that you’re asking for input, but I’m comfortable with you making decisions and having the final say in order to get the project done. It also sounds like you and Sycar want to work on different things, which sounds great.

One thing to keep in mind is that we are only going to see the back of the main character if we go with the 2nd rough. I like the lantern idea.

We can play with other camera views if we do the assets we have in the round, but I agree we need to consider camera location and primary viewing direction of each asset.

#31

im not to good with stories or modeling to a point of usfulness, but, to be honest, dont stop writing that story, i find it every interesting, please, keep going. :smiley:

#32

Ok, I’m anxious to get modelling; after all, that’s why I decided to try and find people who wanted to do this too.

I am generally satisfied with composition of second image. We can play with it more once we have the assets ready for posing. We’ll have to decide compositing layers then too.

I think I’d like everyone’s opinion on whether this is a fantasy peice, and historical peice, or even a sci-fi peice. Of course we should be honouring the story appropriately, but as any good short story is, this one is universal enough it will fit any of the genres.

Once we get the genre nailed, we’ll have to gather reference images. Dories, ships, clothes and people. We can post them here. Get in touch with me if you need storage space.

Whalers were pretty gritty sailors… maybe not appropriate for a sailor with a sense of dut

There’s a lot of stuff for pirates. Actually most compelling so far

Same as the pirate gallery artist.

#35

hmmmm lets combine looks from 2 different time periods. each look should be well known and reconized by anyone

#36

I would agree. I think that the best approach would be to somewhat formalize the pirate outfit. That way it looks good, but suggest duty, military, structure… etc.

#37

hmmm good idea… anyway we can get a simple quick sketch and work from there?

#38

We could really use a 2d artist.
I’m actually seriosly contemplating just modelling the pirate in the red coat.

#39

well i guess u could… start on it and post shots of it as you work and get C&C and we can bounce ideas off people.

This forum uses vB code however so …

(Just remove the red dots)

The other option is to attach files using the [Manage Attachments] button listed under “Additional Options” when making a new post. Upload your full size image and a thumbnail is auto created.
