I didn’t have much luck searching on google image search, but I have something specific in mind.
Tell her, “We have good story with a subversively successful female protagonist who upsets the damsel in distress archetype”

Glad you liked it! I originally wrote it as just a short story, though making it longer is an idea… I just got a big helping of humble pie from my writer’s workshop, and I’ve considered at least adding some more to it to maybe clarify some things. If you have any crits or comments I’d be glad to hear them.
How about something like this?

I really like that pirate picture.
Thanks, that’s a really good modelling reference. Probablya little too heroic, over athletic. I need that kind of reference but a little less muscular.
I was looking at www.3d.sk Lots of stuff there, but nothing just right.
I hot linked the picture in the first post to hopefully inspire some artists who may have just scanned our thread
http://free-textures.got3d.com/natural/free-character-references/free-character-texture-references-man-3/index.htmlWhat do you think about this guy as the modelling refernce? I think he has the right jaw, and he’s wearing a suit, which I think would be reasonale to extrapolate to the one that our character is wearing.

All of the free references here. Woman 3 has an exotic look and and up hair-do that may work for a woman from this time period.
oh its fine if he wants to start on the ship there are a lot of parts and detail that need/should be added
3d.sk had some nice ancient costume references. May I suggest using woman 3 for the face and head, then choosing a costume reference? Maybe some artistic period paintings or drawings and any real modelling references that you can find?
I’ve started on the male crew member. I have not made much progress. My approach for this will be to make an athletic male blank model which will serve me in the future for making male characters. From it I will scale, push, pull it into shape then do details.
Had a couple of hours today while the boy was sleeping and there was a raging snow storm outside, so I started on my “male character blank” model; which will eventually be saved out in a neutral state and then developed into the male character from the story. I didn’t get enough time to keep working from the side. Did most from the front and in a user view.

Please excuse the file name. The character concept artwork is from an art exhibition on real life pirates.
Retrospectively, I have way too much detail in the mesh at this point. I think of how I spent my time and a lot was pulling individual verts or small selection sets with soft selection. I probably could have a better base mesh by sticking a bunch of hexagons together. I may play with that. Basically start over. We’ll see.
Hi guys, I’ve read this thread through. Is the project alive? Is something going on?
strange, that you’ve started to develop the characters before the whole storyboard is created. I think you should really prepare storyboard - it will make further work much clear and easier. Example: Maybe we don’t see some character in full length in any of the shots - so why to model his legs? Or the props: there are certain parts of them seen in the frame, so why detail the whole building/item, if it won’t be seen in final movie?
I am 2d artist, have basic knowledge of Maya, Aftereffects, Word
I suggest to make storyboard.
