I have acces to maya and max!
my vote goes for MAYA!
As far as I understood I am helping in rigging department and we can make quite straigth forward UserInterface (for animation controls) for animators who are not familiar with maya!

Looks like it’s going to be Maya 6.0.1 & MR for everything past modeling. Any objections? Speak now or forever hold your peace.
For rendering purposes I’d prefer Mental Ray 3.4 which comes with Maya 6.5, since it’s better integrated into Maya and provides better Final Gathering.
But I will join the majority - Maya 6.0.1 isn’t bad at all.
Once we switch to rendering we can indeed use 6.5, no compatibility problems when upgrading see… Ofcourse, thats not up to me
im down for maya 6.0.1 for production,
After Effects 6 for Compositing
Final Cut Pro for editing.
I agree with AE for compositing. I use it quite a lot and it produces very nice effects (no pun intended)
I have an idea…how about Blender?
We can all download it( its free and only about 5meg ) and with a few days spare before the start date we could quickly get up to speed with the interface. Kirt’s project isn’t exactly un-reasonable( the worst is producing cubes’n’spheres ) for this change in software. Also, we don’t have to worry about formats! :bounce:
And consider also, if one of us is having trouble grasping a certain part of Blender - the rest of the team can help’em out. On top of that - I know quite a few CGTalkers who know Blender like the back of their hand…
Now, before you reply, give it atleast a good five minutes of thought. Normaly I would agree that this would be a stupid ide - but the given project is perfect for this exercise.
Failing that - I have access to Maya 5.0…
I think everyone wants to see this finished and I hardly think most of us will be willing to learn blender when we can get right to work with the softwares we know.
I agree with all guys here saying go with Maya 6.5 for everything and also in Modeling i would strongly recomend XSI 4.2 Foundation. I could also recomend that if u could find a solid pipeline to export all your animation from Maya back to XSI , because the implementation of MR in XSI is veeery solid and less time consuming than in MAYA.
Here also important role has to do the support of the app …meaning help on many stuff “how to…” in an app…MAYA’s is very strong there. If u can’t go back and forth and this seems mind bubbling , stick to the initial thought. Maya for everything and XSI for Modeling (and i would say also UV mapping of the characters).
P.S : XSI 's polygon - SubD modeling is superb , u will love it.
I dont think Maya to XSI is so easy, especially for such a small project, I think figuring out a way to perfectly get everything into XSI would take more time that won’t be that necessary… in what way is XSI mental ray better then Maya’s Mental Ray?
Don’t get me wrong my friend…this is only personal opinion…But i am using Maya 5 years now and XSI only 4-5 months…Shading in MR in XSI feels more natural than in MAYA (…and i love Maya like nuts u know…)…
In any case if our friend needs in his film to have less trouble he should go in one app and do it all there…this has less headaches for sure …but if he wants SubD modeling fast and with better poly tools then ,if 500 $ isn’t an issue here…, should also at least work the poly-SubD models in XSI…
All that i wrote is just personal opinion through the process i am experiencing this last month where i use only XSI (not Maya at all…) for my challenge entry. And i must admit that i am VERY impressed with what u can do with 500 Euros app…:buttrock:.
just my opinion…nothing more.
It looks as if we will be using MAYA for this short. Kirt pending, I guess that is what we will be going ahead with, as most animators/modelers/lighters use this.
How about rendering software? What sort of plug ins would work with this?
It seems that maya is going to be people’s choice… so to make it stronger, my vote goes for maya: MAYA 6.5 (or 6.0.1 if you guys want)
post: After Effects 6.5 pro
editing: Final Cut
:applause:
cheers
we are modeling cubes and spheres here man , why go into the trouble of exporting anim from maya to xsi with the cubes we modeled in xsi and wha? For the sake of keeping things unified I think its pretty clear that maya 6.0\6.5 is the software of choice.
I was talking in general pipeline(not only for the modeling and animation in this short film, he will spend his money …won’t he?..) about using both…of course in this project u don’t have to go all this trouble…Maya (…and in any case just one app) is more than fine of course.
So as paperclip said …Maya is the choice…
