3D Sculpting Workshop - Movement

FistOfGod, imtilongchar, SpiritDreamer

As you can see I did the base mesh with zspheres, but it’s still not finished. I have several questions to ask:
1.How to make a hand with zspheres, especially the palm and a wrist? I don’t know how to flatten a zsphere and now it looks very unnaturally.
2. Is it better to make foot fingers with zspheres or just to sculpt them?
3. And should I use zspheres to get the base form of a nose and eyes?
Sorry if it’s not a correct place to ask questions.

Hey there – i’m in the same boat, trying to figure out just how to go about this thing. The most i’ve ever done in zbrush to-date is a simple skull, and of course i had to pick a multi-character sculpture for this workshop (Apollo and Daphne). I just completed my male and female base meshes (i hope they aren’t too crappy to work with, that’s another issue!) and i’ve exported them to .obj and am now pulling them into zbrush and learning how to use transpose (MUCH quicker than rigging!!) to pose them. My plan is to keep each figure as a separate subtool as well as the base, the cloth and probably each figure’s hair, though i’m not 100% decided on that last one. This project is going to be a huge learning experience for me and i’m pretty sure i’ll be making every mistake in the book along the way!

Well, good luck to you on yours – looking forward to seeing all the great sculptures as they develop here!

 rasmusW - it is subtle  - but she does actually look like she’s walking so you can have it

cecil - looks fine the way you’ve made it… you can get a flatter shape while sculpting…if you do want to go on refining the z-sphere model then I suggest these threads:

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=48647

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=9904&page=8&pp=15

there’s quite a lot of good examples there

gilgamesh828 - sounds to me like you know what you’re doing  Looking forward to seeing the models in question!

#104

cool, thanks magda…
-i actually did start on her just before i wrote you, the question.
so here’s my wip for today (a a few ref pics). blocking her out. arms feet and head still looks like a bad polygon.

cecil: if you wanna learn some more zbrush i’ll surely follow some the examples magalena suggested, but from a personal point a view, i would model in all those ā€œsmallerā€ details afterwards.

nice work there. i am just wondering why you always make something scary or monster like ?

#106

Rasmus - really like the start there! I actually enjoy your ā€˜fleshy’ feel more than the sculpture  Should turn out to be a beauty

yay - I’ve finished my base - finally can get to sculpting. So final decision, something modern: Richard Macdonald’s Blind Faith

I’m a big fan of his work so it’ll be my little tribute

here’s the base [some glitches but I hope to correct them in sculpting :D] :

At long last, the base mesh for my piece is pretty much together. Bases for both the male and female are from-scratch, tho i’ve been working on building good base heads off and on for the last few months; so i had a head-start there. I can already feel the need to push the poses a bit and probably will tomorrow, before heading into Z. Yikes… i am sooo in-over-my-head here!! No guts, no glory!

Cheers -

Hey Fistofgod!.. awesome start dude!! :bounce:

hey Cecil!.. your zspheres base mesh is looking good, except that you will have trouble at the finger-bases… it is better that you export it to a traditional 3d program(maya/xsi/max etc…) and fix the fingers.

Ramsus, awesome start, dude!!.. rock on!!:scream:

hey Imti!!.. looking great!

Hey Magda!!.. great choice! :scream: cant wait to see how this turns out!!:bounce:

btw, I posted link to a coupla base meshes here in case anybody wants to borrow one :D… well, I dont know if you are not supposed to borrow the base mesh… ask Magda.

#109

oh god…hey megda… this topic s so awesome,…love to see sculpture.
i am in…will post soon.

heyyo Anand,. thanks for share mesh base…thanks a million…

wow magdalena, i’m really intrested in seeing how this turns out. bet it will be awesome.

gilgamesh828: nice start on your sculpt.

it’s my birthday today, so you woulden’t see any updates from me today.

#111

Hey Rasmus!!!.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, buddy!!:scream: have a great day!!

#112

Great start, giglamesh!!

#113

Hi
Magdaleno i have a question about making pose
so how you making a pose ? do you make a simple rig ? maybe you do pose in zbrush?
can you show a some wires ?
btw. great choice, i’ll be watching you

:bounce:

#114

gilgamesh828 - AWesome start :bounce: I’m really looking forward to that one!

Anand - oh bless! You're too good :) Thank you for sharing!

htodi - GREAT! Another soul :D

rasmusW - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! You're definitely excused :) Have a good one!

nielot - thanks Tomasz! Well I’m a hater when it comes to rigs so I never resort to those if I can help it :scream:[though I have been planning to build a simple mesh and rig it for future projects but the thought of weighting those points makes me shudder ;)]
I cheat but hey, it gets me where I want to go… basically I take an old mesh, cut it into pieces where the big joints are and put the parts together as I want them… afterwards I either connect them or like in this case simply build on top… I find it quite an easy way out
no time to build it all from zero… here’s the wire

Tadas/cecill …Anand gave me a really nice tut on making hands and fingers using Z BRUSH…it’s somewhere way back in my sketchbook thread…maybe he will post it in here, if he is asked nicely… …would be very useful to alot of people in here I think… …NICE START BY THE WAY…

Rasmus…NICE START…I also like that softness that you have so far in your model…HAPPY BIRTHDAY…:bounce:

Gilgamesh…NICE START…I think you will learn how to swim before you sink…by the look of your piece so far, you will be doing the back stroke, and double back flips with a full twist very shortly…:scream:

Magdalena…GREAT SELECTION…I never have seen his work, but i’m going to check it out as soon as I get off of here…really like his concept for the piece your working on…pefect ballence there…
THANKS also for sharing your method of cheating…if it works, don’t fix it…:scream:
GREAT JOB SO FAR…EVERYONE…Learning alot from seeing these pieces develope…
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Worked on the hand and forarm holding that’s holding the pan flute…made it bigger to match the hand holding the club…also worked on the leg below that hand, and the foot on that leg.

#116

thanks Glenn!

a just a tiny bit today - hacking in basic shapes, 2 levels of subd only… early days

#117

gilgamesh828, great start  I was also thinking of making this sculpture, but I changed my mind because it looked too difficult for me and I took simplier one. I have quite a lot reference images of Apollo and Daphne so I can post them if you need it.

Thanks a lot to everyone for the help. I’m fairly new to Zbrush. it helped me a lot. I did as anandpg said - I exported my model to max, modelled hands, then brought it back to Zbrush.

And here’s what I’ve got so far. It was my first time when I used transpose. I have a lot problems with his right arm, especially on the shoulder, but I hope I will fix them.

#118

cecill - I see your model’s all triangles - I suggest you go back to max before you move on with the sculpting… you’ll have a lot of problems otherwise. In max there’s an option in the obj exporter that lets you select quads instead of tris. This way your mesh won’t be triangulated

#119

yes, DEFINITELY get rid of as many tri’s as you can before subdividing… it’s amazing how troublesome they can be, creating pinch spots and funky areas you just can’t smooth out.

And YES, i’d love to see what kind of images you’ve found for Apollo and Daphne – i’m short on several key angles still!!! Thanks!

#120

rasmusW - Nice start! Great block!

intervain - Nice topology and dinamic pose! :)

So, here's mine: Bacchus by Michael Rysbrack:

Here’s the begining of the base mesh. I think i must work more in some proportions:
