3D Portrait render in Keyshot/Crits please

#1

I have been busy exploring a new rendering pipeline with Keyshot. Model in Zbrush, Hair with Fibermesh. UV in Roadkill, skin and texture maps in Mari, Materials, lights and render in Keyshot, Post and image grading in PS.

One interesting thing to note with this particular skin material is that it does not allow you to load a specific sub-surface scatter map. Instead I had to feed the shader with a solid color which resulted in a skin rendition that was quite (surprisingly) convincing. Other peculiar aspect regarding the skin material is the absence of an “overall map” slot which essentially allows you to multiply down details lost because of the scatter (The Diffuse layer is simply added on top of the Scattered layer which makes it hard to recuperate details such as moles for example). This wasn’t as big of a problem as anticipated but I still had to dial back some of the details in post.

All in all, this new rendering pipeline has been remarkably efficient and intuitive and I can’t see myself going back to Mental Ray anytime soon. I am looking forward to my next project, in the mean time I hope you enjoy this one.

I am looking for feedback, thanks!

Is it me or your eye don’t focus at the same target or have the same size iris?

The forehead gleam looks spot on to me, very nice. The stubble looks a little odd though, like the pores are too big maybe.

EDIT: The eyes looked odd to me too but I didn’t mention it because I assume it to be a lighting or a reflection issue. He does looks lazy eyed though.

Thank you both! You are both right, the iris have different sizes and I should probably back off that beard as well
@LitheriaRising: What do you mean by lazy eyed? You think I should open up the eye a little more?

You guys are very useful, anything else? Destroy it please!

Can you share front/side/3/4 views without lens distortion or hairs?

WOuld like to judge the shape of your head. Look off a bit: squish

Scote! Thanks again for your help. The face also appears to me off, but for the life of me, I can’t point out what it is. Can you at least point out the general area of the face that is bothering you?

The model is rough, it was not intended as a portfolio piece but just as a quick base on which to test out skin in Keyshot, the anatomy is off in a few areas. I took screenshots to show you but I am not sure how I can upload it here without posting to a site first. Is there a way?

Thanks a bunch!

ps: I sent it to your gmail

Thanks for the mail… but why dont you share it on the forum? People can also judge like me and get other comment that I couldnt see. ALsdo it’s not really a real side view. We need to see your orthographic views basically

What’s your reference? can you also share it?

Scote, I’ve got to move on for now but should you feel like adding something to your previous feedback, please do so, thanks again and good luck in your own endeavors!

I meant it looks like the eye on the right side is looking a bit up and to the right, like they aren’t focusing on the same point. Ive been looking closer trying to find something else to critique, the hair strand thickness seems to be a little high, like his hair and his beard are the same diameter and the facial hair should be coarser.

Yea, I have to say I am not a big fan of the hair, I’ll see what I can do.

That said, thank you so much, the both of you! I really value your feedback and will bring improvements to this shot as soon as I am done with my current project (Very soon hopefully). I will keep on posting other works for critique and you are more than welcome to participate in it!
