I know alot of you guys use A:M primarily for character animation, but I was wondering if you’ve done classic 2d animation as well. If so, would you say classic 2d animation is a prerequisite for 3d character animation? Thanks
2d animation?
I think it helps, but is not necessary. I started with 3D, but learned a whole lot after working with traditional hand drawn animation. It helps you get a grasp of the fundamentals like anticipation, squash&strech, timing etc. Not that you couldn’t get a good understanding of these priciples using only 3D anim. It certainly helps you get good at pose to pose animation, rather than animating straight ahead, which i hear is fairly common among 3D animators.
I guess it is a fundamental skill, which you should have a go at if you have the opportunity. Even if you never do it again, it can only make your animation skills and understanding more complete.
