1930s Railway station - WIP

#1

I have been working on this 1930s railway station for quite a while, but to keep myself motivated I’ll start posting progress pictures in here.

The design is a mix of Gare du Nord in Paris (Mainly the walls and columns), The main rail station in Copenhagen and bit of my own design.

I have a pretty clear idea of how the final picture will look like.

The first steps looked like this:

I’ll post a few more WIP pictures later.

And a few material test renders:

#3

And this is pretty much how far I am at the moment:

This is the composition that I had in mind.

I am currently working on the characters.

#4

I love that era. Good luck. I think you have a great start already. Do you plan to populate the scene it with many characters?

#5

Brilliant! The clay renders look amazing! Keep going!!!

#6

Wow, that’s really promising! I love the last update you posted - the modelling looks great so far and it looks like you’re going to end up with a really nice scene. Is that the lighting you’re going to go with in the end, or is that still subject to change? Because I think you could do something really creative and stunning with the lighting, mood and atmosphere here. For example, you could set it in winter, placing snow/moisture on the tops of the trains and moisture on the platforms which would add a really nice reflective element to the scene, along with volumetric lighting through the rooftops, with dust motes and haze.

I like your composition but think it might be better if you shifted the camera to the right slightly, so that the track exits the bottom of the frame instead of the right hand side.

#7

Well, keep yourself motivated cos this looks awesome. I would love to see more closeups

Scote: Thanks. There will be 2 boys and woman in the foreground and a few other characters in the background. I am not sure exactly how many I will make.

Gadzooks, Thanks

Leigh: Thanks I really appreciate your feedback. Good point on the composition. I have tried adjusting it a bit, by turning the camera a bit to the right, making the picture format a bit wider and by moving a few of the objects. The tracks still exit in the right side of the picture  But at least it is closer to the corner. I suppose I could move the newsstand and the camera to the right aswell. That might do the trick.

The central characters will be 2 boys and a woman. I want the woman to be the main focus of the picture so I want to use the rule of thirds and place her near one of the intersecting lines.

The newsstand plays an important role as I am planning on placing the 2 boys near the gum dispenser.

I really like your idea with snow on the trains and water on the platforms. I have already modelled a few characters without winther clothing, so I might make it rainy instead of snow…or change the clothing of my characters. I will have to do a few tests.

I haven’t made the final lighting yet. I want a more dramatic light in the scene than what I have here. I was thinking a bit like that famous black and white photo from Grand Central Station. I can’t quite get the look that I want straight from the render, so I think I will have to render a few passes just for some of the lightsources and fix it in Photoshop.

Here is a new test render:

Edit:

Here is another test where I’ve moved the newsstand and camera a bit to the right

Nippur: Thanks a lot. I appreciate that

Here is a few test renders that I did of some of the newsstand, tracks and bench:

#10

DAM! This will look incredible!!!

I will keep two eyes on this!

#11

This is more then 1 year of work or?
How dou you make the material so realistic?!

#12

Yeah, the good old Gare du Nord! Nice work as always, Latter! I agree, the second version is better, less symmetrical, therefore more busy. Presonally i’d try it with a lower camera to get more of the roof – perhaps

And hello from snowy Zurich! :arteest:

#13

2xbo, thanks a lot.

Zokana, Hi I haven´t seen anything from you in a long time. It is nice to hear from you again. You have snow in Zürich? There is no snow in Denmark at the moment… just rain.

regarding the composition. I think I’ll make a few adjustments to the latest test that I did and then try and lower the camera just a bit. I’ll place a few dummy characters just to see if I have enough floor Space. I don’t want the lower left corner to be too cluttered.

Oh and another test render. This time of one of the passenger cars. I could perhaps have made even more details of the area near the wheels, but that part will not be visible in the scene.

Edit… I just noticed that there is an “N” too many in Pullman. I need to fix that

#14

So cool! I love that style.
Is that VRay?

Great job. I’m gladly going to follow it!

#15

I’m also doing a railroad station (in nature though), but man, this is just killer work, I’m amazed. Keep going, I really don’t have any critiques for you

Cheers,
David.

#16

The sheer quality of detail in your renders always amazes me; I wish I had your expertise! I look forward to following the progress.

#17

Incredible piece of work. Looks promising. Level of details and composition is really good. Keep moving forward. Eager to see what’s next. Good luck!

#18

Absolutly stunning work so far, gonna keep my eyes on this project to see how it proceeds.

btw, love the gumball machine

Napelazam, Sorry I hadn’t seen your post. I don’t know exactly how much time I’ve spent on this project, but it is a long time.
Regarding the materials… I am using a lot of reference photos to get an idea of how the materials look in real life. For most materials I use vray blend materials to get the right amount of dirt, scratches and laquer (when needed).

jacopoS, Thanks. Yes I am using Vray

BrikProductions, Thanks I am happy you find it interesting

maxster, thanks

FerryvD, thanks. I am happy to hear you like the gumball machine. It took a while to get just right.

I am currently modelling some of the characters. This Train conductor will be standing in the background near the locomotive.

Fantastic work. Looking forward to seeing how this develops!
