Now that the Hellboy movie is coming next year, I thought it could be cool to go back to the comic and try to make a model that looks like the real thing! As any fan would probably say, no movie can ever get close to the dynamic and power of Mignolas artwork.
I did this short animation to see how far I could get to the original drawings, and also if there were ways I could get away from the apparent semi-3D look that most toon-rendered 3D ends up having. I think I got pretty close, but you should judge for yourselves.

This is all done in 3dsmax, using a low-poly cage of about 10.000 polys. Everything is painstakely modeled by hand, to make sure that just the right shadows and edges would appear. I've only done the upper torso, since I was limited in the time I could spend. Before you ask: I will post no wireframes of this, since I want to keep some of this close to my chest
It is all rendered in the amazing Brazil Rendering System from Splutterfish, with it's built in toon-shader. The animation was rendered in separate layers, so that I could do the colouring post-render in a compositing package.
Anyway, I haven't got much more to say. The animation is very short (too short!), but I still hope some of you might like it

That looks awesome. And I'm saddened by the fact that you won't release any wires, but it's your choice Would've been nice to see.
And please find the time to make a longer animation. I'd love to see where you can take this. Just looks so good

damn thats impressive. I like how you captured the look of the comic exactly. when its paused it looks like its a page out of the book. Mignola might want to see this

Had to plug this, this is one of the best 2d-3d translations I have ever seen...and mignolias style is a hard one to capture in any medium, let alone 3d, great work.
