Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Angels & Devils - 021

OFDW 021: Feb. 16, 2007 - Mar. 16, 2007

Welcome to the TWENTY-FIRST thread of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop!!!

This workshop is open to any medium and any style. Some informal moderation
will be gladly provided by Joel Carlo / Rebecca Kimmel ~ however, the purpose of the
Workshop is for Artists to interact with and informally critique one another’s work.

For this OFDW, we are trying something new - a themed Workshop in which the topic is:

"Angels & Devils"

The goal of this Workshop is to COMPLETE one or more FINISHED Master Copies and/or unique pieces. This is unlike the Anatomy Lesson Series in which the goal is quantity. Here, it's QUALITY of one or two finished pieces.

Guidelines for OFDW 021:

1. The theme is "Angels & Devils".

2. You have 1 MONTH in which to create EITHER a finished master copy or a unique piece using the theme outlined above. All artwork can be done can be done in either traditional or digital, drawing or painting, sculpture or 3D model.

3. An angel or devil may be female or male, human or creature, young or old. Both, however, must be a living organism and not something inorganic. You must also use PHYSICAL traits that make an angel or devil easily recognizable to the viewer. Characteristics such as wings and horns are encouraged but can be broadly interpreted.

4. You may place your interpretation of an angel or devil within an environment, but it is not completely necessary. The emphasis of this OFDW will be more on technique and character development (including both physiological and psychological aspects). The goal is to create an image that displays a character's personality and temperament through its physical attributes.

5. Creativity in composition is encouraged! You can either do a detail, portraits, partial or full body layouts so long as the image stays true to the theme listed above.

6. While not required, it is suggested that you post concept sketches as well as WIP of your stages of work. WIP is strongly encouraged in the OFDWs!

7. If you are creating a unique piece, please aim for a high level of finish - not just sketches. The purpose of this workshop is to help you develop your anatomy, drawing, and painting skills. Cartoon/cell-shaded/manga style images are discouraged.

8. TRACING IS NOT ALLOWED! However, using grid techniques is acceptable.

9. Only work created after the beginning of this workshop will be accepted. Work created before the posting of this workshop is not allowed.

10. Please note that FINISHED WORK ONLY will be SPOTLIGHTED!

Note: This Workshop will last 4 weeks.

Hey guys, I wanna try out for this, I've got some questions, that maybe you could help me with
I did read the rules, but I'm still not sure, are those images you posted references, the way our drawings should look like, or maybe the detail of anatomy we should use, sorry may sound confusing
Also Is this tread for anyone, meaning yes, I'll try my best to create a quality image, but my best may not be good enough :P Is this for experienced members only?
And last questions, are caricatures allowed(just wondering :P ) or do we have to stick to solid construction and anatomy
Anyway yeah I'd really like to join this tread, It'd be really great if you could help me with these questions, thanks

For this workshop you can do one of two things:

1) Create a master copy using the references posted above
2) Create your own unique image based on the Angels and Devils theme

Regardless of skill level, anyone is welcome to participate so long as they adhere to the rules... one of which is #7 which states that cartoon/cell-shaded/manga style images are discouraged. The purpose of this workshop is to help you develop your anatomy, life drawing, and painting skills... not cartooning skills

You should push for a high level of detail in your final image(s), equivalent or close to the references posted above. The workshop is open for one month which should be plenty of time to create a highly polished master copy or unique image, regardless of your skill level. Try to do your best and push yourself to create great art. Good luck!

Hey, This OFDW21 is what I need to keep me sane, right now.

Hi Joel, So nice to have you hosting this workshop. Am anticipating some tremendous 2d and 3D work soon to show up. Hey Rebecca, nice call in inviting the lovely MHChimp to the helm.

Didn't get to finish my start, so I'm pulling the image. It will probably appear in my SB when I finish.

Hi, everyone!

I'm newbie here, and I've come from CA.org. I'm trying to expand my contacts with other artists, and I found great ones here.

I'll try to take part on this workshop, it seems to be very interesting.
