Question Could someone please explain the clone stamp tool?

I just can't get the hang of the clone stamp tool (I'm using Photoshop 6.0). As far as I can see, all it does is shift the image about 10-20 pixels when I paint. If I were to paint over the entire canvas after doing the little 'clone' thing I'd have the same exact image just moved diagonally down 10 or so pixels. How am I supposed to use it? It's been sitting there just taunting me ever since it was installed.

Is clone stamp diff from rubber stamp? I don't remember. But here's what I use the rubber stamp for ....

Anyhow, when I use it, I usually use it to correct color blotch irregularities on photos (e.g., pimples, scars, etc). Pressing alt and then clicking on the wanted color blotch copies that section. Then I stamp over the areas of bad color, the pimples usually, and it just kinda blends the skin nicely on photos. This same thing works w/ most any other images too.

Thanks for replying singularity2006.

Here's what's going on when I do it:

-Let's say I try and clone the part right above the eye in this picture:

-And then I try and paint with it in the area shown in this picture:

What happened? Am I only able to just click it once rather than actually paint with it? I don't really have a use for the tool, but I would still like to know how to use it just in case I might need it...

-I'm confused to say the least.

ah, ur clone stamp is too big. The clone stamp is generally for smaller objects, dobs and such. U can just as easily use the lasso tool, select that hair, feather, and copy again. When u have a rectangular marquee and set that as ur cloned item, it basically does just that except it uses the dimensions of ur selection to select, feather, and clone.

Have a look at

there's a nice step by step tutorial about the clone tool.

the clone stamp is great to paint things away, while keeping some color and texture. the trick is to set the region you clone (alt-click) often while doing so.
