The Freeze

Hi everyone.

Could someone please tell, how to create this effect of freezing. I have 3ds Max and Maya, if you know something about this effect, please please please tell how to do this or give me a few puzzles to get the image in one piece. Here is the link to video

Different textures/materials which get revealed plus additional geometry for the ice and snow.
In 3ds Max you can reveal materials using a blend map or a top/bottom material, objects can be revealed/cut off using a slice modifier.
Not sure why ypou ask this in Editing/Compositing though.

I just had feelings that answer will be like "it was done in AE or Nuke" but your answer pushed me to do some researches. Thank you, I will try to play with blend option for textures and discover parts of ice with slice modifier.

There's very likely a lot of postwork involved, probably even the particles, but the asset creation itself is something you can easier do in 3d.

Nuke offers 3d tools for projection though, maye it's easier to do that stuff in post, including the blending. I haven't looked much into those tools so I can't comment further on that option.

its for sure a mixture of 3d and 2d work
first you need a matchmove of the camera and matching geometry. for this geometry you make the frozen/icy texture. render the scene with the icy texture and the matchmove camera. then you can blend it in 2d with some animated mask. i would blend it 2d/post because its then faster to change the timing

Currently I have done two layers, one with simple scene without snow, and the second with covered snow. Now I need render cameras and then create mask and open bottom layer with mask.

I think I am a little bit closer to the result that I wanted. Here is the link to file with test video, I have tested it on game model. If you are interested on what I have got, please download it here an archive is about 15 mb. But video about 250 mb, sorry about such a huge space I wanted to create it in a good quality. Now I think about how to cover model with little icy ropes like Ivy generator does, and how to create animation of growing icy lillies on the model.
