ice cracking

Hi guys

What is the best way to get the effect on an ice cracking? I need to slowly crack an ice block and then burst it in into pieces. I know I can pre fragment the block manually and then use something like Momentum to do the explosion, but I have no idea how to do the actual cracking.

Thanks in advance.

If you're already "on" 2012, this might interest you:
ICE Modeling : A Procedural Bullet Shattered Glass Compound
This probably isn't "the" solution you're looking for, but might be a good starting point

Thanks Hirazi.
Yes that looks nice, but as you said is not going to do the job and it comes with 2012 which I dont have.

More suggestions guys? ....

Use prefragmented mesh that has basically no spaces in the fragments. Then make the insets(the ice side profile) into own object by extracting the polygons. Render a pass with clean ice, without the insets.

Then make another pass for "cracking", where you basically make the insets(cracks) appear. You can do that in multiple ways. In compostition, driven by texture, booleans ect.

Then finally the pass with both ice surface and the insets.
When the cracking is done you change into the final pass with both.

You can make the cracking procedual in 3D with multiple clones of the mesh and merging, but I don`t see the point in doing that.
This would be perfect job for 2012, tho.

Thanks ViCoX. Really helpful suggestions. The things is that after the cracking I will have to explode the ice into pieces.
