why does multiply merge add as well?

I'm wondering why it is that if you have a Multiply merge, it can lighten as well, if you have, say, a brightened occlusion pass. Shouldn't it just darken? Is there a mode to do this typical Photoshop-style multiply?

I guess, thinking about it more, it makes sense that it's multiply value in excess of 1, resulting in overbrightness. Using a clamp fixes it.

yeah Nuke does it correctly I suppose, drove me mad for awhile as well.
