NewTek Ships LightWave™ 10
3D artists gain interactive viewport rendering, real-time stereoscopic preview, Virtual Studio Tools for immersive walkthroughs and the first complete linear color space workflow, all within an enhanced user interface

SAN ANTONIO – December 30, 2010 – NewTek, a worldwide leader of 3D animation and video products, releases NewTek LightWave™ 10-the latest version of its Emmy® Award-winning 3D software. LightWave 10 delivers a whole new set of capabilities for 3D producers and studio pipelines. Now, 3D artists have the ability to focus on the creative process with tools that provide immediate feedback, whether they work alone or in a multi-software studio. LightWave 10 leverages new technologies developed in LightWave CORE and showcases NewTek's commitment to the creation of tools that support the artistic process. With LightWave 10, artists have the ability to interact directly in the viewport and see changes to lights, textures, volumetrics and more, to view updates to their stereoscopic work in real time, and to deliver realistic environment walkthroughs in ways never before possible. With data interchange tools that enhance pipeline integration and a fresh user interface, LightWave 10 is the most artist-friendly, production-ready version of LightWave ever. Developed through continued collaboration with 3D artist members of the LightWave HardCORE community and key Hollywood studios, LightWave 10 delivers the benefits artists count on.

"We upgraded to LightWave 10 with its linear color space workflow because it lets us achieve photorealism so much faster. It helps bring out all the qualities of the rock solid LightWave render engine," said Stefan Bredereck, supervising artist EdenFX. "With LightWave, we achieved the needed results super fast, and we accomplished even the most challenging tasks. LightWave 10 speeds things up even more. The new features make it a very valuable tool for our studio."

  • Viewport Preview Renderer (VPR)--render in real time, with the ability to limit the render region, for maximum performanc
  • New Anaglyph Stereoscopic Preview-real-time interocular, 'red-blue' anaglyphic separation delivers the ability to view changes as they happen

"Our goal with LightWave 10 is to deliver workflows that best serve the artist and support their creative discovery process, allowing them to interact with their 3D content like never before," said Rob Powers, NewTek vice president of 3D development. I'm having a play with the LW10 trial, which looks to be the familiar layout and modeller at first glance, and I like the new darker interface - going the way of Maya 2011 it seems. However, ..Did I understand this correctly - there is CORE app yet to trial? .. I was hoping to play with the new bullet dynamics system but the dynamics tab is gone & there seems to be no CORE button?

If CORE isn't there yet, when will I be able to review it? Or maybe I've missed something, Is it not part of LW10?

Apologies if its just my misunderstanding.

You have access to CORE alpha\betas if you buy lw10 is what I got from reading the Newtek site. I doubt they will include core with the trial version of Lw10.

VPR.. what can I say.. *sniff*

Its a thing of beauty.

5 area lights, a point light and a distant light around PirahnaAlien, and it made gorgeous openGL image in 13 seconds on my old rig.

The competition's openGL seems, in comparison, ugly by default. VPR is lovely by default.

It IS about time we stopped staring at grey meshes, imagining how our pictures might look, is it not?

Seems to me like Softimage's Mulcor found a new job after the acquisition.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist...)

well, it's 'blue'...but so was AVATAR's characters and the head of 3d division at NEWTEK was the main guy on the VAD team for Avatar...so blue makes sense.

I wish they would just integrate modeller, and layout into one application, perhaps keep them in separate 'master' tabs and just tab between them at the top, with the ability to have separate scenes open in each tab, I.e. one (or multiple) models open in modeller, and one scene open in layout, simple tab to change, and an an append button to bring the models straight in.

Anyway I'm hoping Core will change things up a bit.

You're not going to like it when CORE comes out then, because that will make LW a 3-app pipeline. LW10 Layout, LW10 modeller and LWCORE.

Only during the transition to CORE that is.

I am going to guess that this "transition" will probably take at least another 3-5 years to get Core to a level where artists can forget about modeler and layout and be able to do most of their work in the unified Core.

Maybe, maybe not, who knows? I just wanted to make the point that it will not be permanently 3 apps.
