Lens Flares with out light.....

Today some one asked me... How can I create a lens flare that does not emit light?

Since flares can only be created with a light (like a point or spot) they will Illuminate the objects in the scene. Turning the strength or attenuation of the light down is not a good solution, because that also kills the flare. The best way to do it is to just turn off the Specular and Diffuse light contribution. The light does not emit light, but the flare will still show up.

could you not achieve it with a selective light?

Yes, but in my opinion this is a little easier and more reliable.
