Question Fluid Effect: Magic smoke

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this effect I'm trying to make. I want to recreate a "puff" of smoke like a magician would before he makes the something appear.

I've been trying to tweak the puffball effect that comes with maya. But the Smoke always looks too abrasive.
I would need a softer result.

Any ideas?

if you need really soft smoke i would not even go for fluid effects at all..
fluids really only pay of for thick and heavy smoke or somethink like cigarette smoke-movement.

in your case i would go for the fastest way: hardware particles.

make the particle size 1-2, create a lot of them, use multi point.

now create your particles where you need them with e.g. surface emission of a rough stand in and attach a turbulence field (attenuation=0) to the particles.

make the particles conserve value slightly below 1.0 (0.975 e.g.) and then emit them.

now take the particles to a post app and apply a an effect like "trail" or "average" or "ghosting" or whatever it is called in your app. basically an effect that shows several images at once with a fade.
finally blur them hard..

now you have a very soft and puffy result.

Hi alexx

Thanks for the tip. I tried it and it gives off a great effect but not really what I'm looking for (or maybe I'm just doing it wrong) I need the puff to be thick the first 5 frames or so.

Here is where I'm at, maybe you can see what i mean:

I need to get that to turn to thin wispy smoke after 5 or 6 frames. And dissapear within 15-20 frames.

And here is the Maya 5 file. If it will help.

I'd like to use combustion. But unfortunately I don't have a copy at my disposal. :annoyed:

can you go in to this more

like this you can get a trail, that unlike all the other trail and blur tools in maya can have circular and would trails (not in this example but in general)..

your post app just does not read in only one frame, but several of them with different opacity.
if you blur these results you get quite nice trails
