Environment: Desolate Teahouse

Hi all,

Here's my just finished background concept painting of the exterior of a teahouse and an updated interior shot from feedback on an older post (I pushed the perspective on the foreground lanterns).

Originally the teahouse was going to be set on the moon, but I ended up changing it to a desolate, rocky crater on earth instead, so I could bring some more color into the sky.

Crits welcome!

Larger versions of the previous paintings in the series are here: www.alieninthebox.com/updatedportfolio/

and the background section of my portfolio site has the roughs and value studies as well:

Excellent job! I really like the color usage and setting. The detail is amazing. Only thing is the mountains behind the building seem a bit out of place to me. But still excellent...

That looks fantastic, so many details and great atmoshpäre. I would eat there with my family
It looks very "warm" - harmony there. I like it.

You did a fantastic job finishing this piece! The colors are great and really gives the teahouse the place it deserves in the composition. Only thing I could comment about, as I might have added before, that the background rocky wall looks a bit flat. I think that has to do with the topline of the wall is all lined up, no lil piece of wall that stand a bit closer and all. But other then this, great work!
Todays society perfect formula: Get satisfaction, but never feel satisfied. Be content, but never truly happy.

very nice work..
in first one the house and the bridge look excellent but i agree with everyone the background is a bit flat or doesn't fit very good..also the water is kinda flat too..

now second one..that's awesome i love it..great colors and lighting..only thing the curtains are a bit blurry or less worked..but other than that it's a great picture..
keep it up man..

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I updated the first image with a few tweaks on the background. I deepened some of the shadows so the crater wall is a little less flat and so it separates more from the teahouse itself.

The environment is meant to be in a lifeless crater, so I want to keep a bit of an abrupt cut down the rockface (instead of more naturally eroded mountains), but hopefully it reads better now.

Thanks again!
