Basic GI+FG Mental Ray question

i have a pretty basic question about mr.

Say i have a sharp corner (like a quadratic pillar) that is completely in the shadwos and only lit by indirect light. Now it's shadow is pretty inaccurate on more like a blotch. Which part of mental ray is responsible for the accuracy? Do i have to use a smaller FG Point Density, more Rays per FG Point? Even with a large amount of Photons and a small sampling radius, it's still quite blurry.

Here is an example of what i mean:

Turn off photons, I think it's them. It's really simple just turn off fg or photons and see separately.
