Colored Metals

Hi Everyone, I've been struggling with colored metals for awhile. I'm using maya though I'm sure the concept is similar in other applications. The main issue is with the specular highlight. I'm trying to replicate the image in the top left but if you compare the specular highlight of that and the image below there's a very over saturated terminator to the specular highlight. What I would like to have is the nice smooth transition from white. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Separate highlight pass and try screening it on? Something like that?

Don't let Maya control the assembly of the highlight and the diffuse...

I think Maya just does a simple add (linear dodge in Photoshop)

Youd need visible light source intead point light, visible area light or at least light card for reflections. Get rid of all diffuse.

Looks like you are trying to setup it in a fake manner to speed-up the rendertime. I get the same colored specular in max mental ray using area lights. First try to change the reflection color to a more reddish one, it's slightly more red in your reference. This will make the specular less yellow. But maybe just fix it in post, cause looks like it's just how the shader behaves.

Thanks for all of the great responses. I ended up creating my own shader network and it works wonderfully. Here's the result I ended up with
