Padding rendered images

I have a composition set up for rendering, and I want to add some padding around it without affecting the size of the elements in the frame, as seen in the two attached images. It would be difficult if not impossible to change the resolution and reposition the camera so that the objects are exactly the same size, so is there some combination of render global or camera settings that can accomplish what I want? Perhaps there's a mel script to do something like this that I am not aware of? I've search and came up with nothing.

thanks
