Character::Geisha playing Koto

Please edit and post software used:

Hi ppl,

I love oriental culture, and i got a Cd from i friend, this is the cover

I liked the picture but not the girl on this, so i decided to make my own...

Heres what ive got so far:

Smooth Shade

Im aiming here for realism with a little touch of style, for instance, in the proportions, slightly longer than usual neck for instance...I dont really have a clear idea on my head of what i want at the end, i just move on and ideas come by...

Right now, this is pretty academic, but anyway id like to hear comments, id love to hear comments that match meanings with forms, i mean, im not copying a certaing girl, so ears are not too low or too high, but are this way cause it makes the girl look like a child...anyway, every comment is very welcome

Software used:: Lightwave 3D v7.5 for modelling, 3dsmax 5 + Brazil for rendering...

In the wireframe pic, side view: what is that cluster in the mesh just above the ear?

Just curious. It doesn't seem necessary.

Anyway, I couldn't find anything wrong worth mentioning. Great work.

Nice model! The wireframe is great.
Do I see intersections in the upper corner of the ear? Looks
a bit strange on the picture.

I think that the distance between the eye and the
ear (side view) is not right. The ear is too far away I think.
Maybe I'm wrong.

cool idea.. hope it works out well!
first of all yov made a beautifull model, But if i were to have my say .... well then id say stick to the reference model. keep it toony. iv never seen something like that done in 3d efectivly. to much realism these days I say..
any way its just my 2 cents,... but here goes..
tighten up the lips, make em like half the size.. and puckered and toony like the image..
also the bridge of the nose make more stylized and pronounced
and the eyes make simple and almond shaped.
also the face more rounded..

or you can keep doing it realisticly..
and il pout for a while, :annoyed:

but il get over it

Thanks for the replys guys,

Sammael3d: That cluster its there because of the density of the mesh on the ear, i have to connect that edges somewhere, since Im using Lightwave(didnt mention before, sorry), i cant use polys with more than 4vertices(in subpatch), and if i connect them like in triangles the mesh doesnt really gets smooth, anyway, its kinda strange that edgeloops there, i could refine it to look nicer on the wire, but anyway as far as the mesh doesnt show i dont care...

Goro:Yeah, youre right, good eye!, Actually already fixed that, some part of the back of the ear was intersecting the front...
About the distance from eye to ear, well, since this is an oriental head, the skull its more boxy than us caucasians, so the line between the eyes its less curved than what we are used to, anyway u could be right and i did it to pronounced, but it doesnt bother me on the mesh...

PaxtonGerrish: sorry to disappoint ya, but ill continue with the realistic approch, actually i didnt really liked at all the girl on that picture, but loved the pose and topic, thats why i came to the this idea...anyway, doing that kind of tonny style in 3d its something really cool, id like that too...

Thanks all for the comments...

Ill keep updating...

Here goes an update,

Added : hands & the instrument (Actually its called Shamisen, and not Koto).

The Hands were modelled in pose, something I prolly wont do again, the elongated kinda boxy fingers its made on purpose, in fact, the proportions of the fingers with the palm its slightly off, but I wanted that way, as far as it doesnt really stands awfully...anyway, so you guys can know what i have on my head, im more concerned with, "what you feel about it", than technic perfection...

While doing all this, I was thinking about the hair, i dont really know what kind of style i want there, I dont want to make her "real" geisha, not white painted face, and not geishas hairstyle, im more thinking of it like a beautifull young oriental girl playing music, following pose and attitud of a geisha...

So, if you guys have any idea for the hair, please share it, ive been looking for references for the hair, but didnt find anything pleasant...everything i found was either too fancy or to boring...

cool the hands seem so delicate it really works with the character. so whats the overall look that your going for, when it comes down to the textures and lighting.

Specs: Thanks, easy to imagine, very oriental, im not sure about the lightning, ill see, something very minimal, except for the girl and her clothes...i mean the room where she seats...

right now Im having pain&fun with the drapery...

But anyways, noone said, but the more a look at it the more im about to shorten the fingers...

ill update it soon...

ps:i got tons of references, but quality of them are somehow poor, if anyone wanna help ill be glad...

what u think so far?

i love that face, absolutely beautiful.

however, i think the eyes are way too slanted. rather than having a natural asian fold to them, they just seem like a set western eyes that have been rotated about 30 degrees.

the eyes are the only thing that doesn't fit for me.

I agree with beatabix, here's a comparison between a more typical asian eye and a non-asian eye (picture is actually a before/after image of eyelid surgery).

Thank for replys,

I absolutly agree with you guys, but at first, seeing the first reference pic, i wanted not so oriental eyelids, since i thought it could make her look not so beatifull, but ive made some adjustments and ill go a little more for what you guys have pointed, just a little...

here is the progress so far, its going slowly, im not in hurry and im doing couple of things at the same updates take its time...

this is an screen capture, the proportions altogether at this point are a little mess, ie. the forearms are way too long, anyway, i pointed bef. that i wanted stylized look, little elongated features, neck, fingers, palm, arms, anyhow, as i progress the modelling i will be toning down the things that stand too much..

screen capture modelling progress

thanks again,

Looks really great i like this model thus far, maybe you should have her looking at the guitar or something,

Also add more details to the cloth
