texturing a character, ?

i have several characters, and i would like to learn how to texture and paint each one. i have photoshop, so i was wondering if i should bring the uv maps into that app to paint? is this a common method? or is there a way to do it in maya? does anyone know of a decent tutorial to learn the methods and differnt ways to color, and texture?

Yes brining the UV maps into PS is the ususal method after they have you've projected the textures. You might want to check out the 3D paint textures tool which is usefull for blocking out certain areas of your map with colors.
