following lit trajectory

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a 3D short film project and I need your help for some special FX.
Actually I want to do motion graphics with a ping pong ball. I need some kind of light tail to follow my ball. I was wondering which way was the best: using 3ds max particles, composited mesh, or 3D compositing with after effects, trapcode+ tracking? I don't know. Any help is welcomed . If you don't know what I mean, this is an effect you can see in many video games such as soul calibur (the sword trail) or ninja's eye in metal gear solid.
Happy new year and thanks in advance!
