how to blur reflection in post?

If I render a mirror-like reflection and want to make it glossy in post, how is it done? One guy said that they use gradients to blur it and most VFX studios blur reflections in post. But what about those small bump details and mapped reflections? Does this kind of postproceccing has its limitations?

Of course it will never look like real glossy/blurry reflections especially in secondary reflections.
If you are interested in a way to get faster glossy reflections check out point cloud stuff and this thing.
