Brainstorming

I'm looking forward to this challenge. Ideas so far:

--Little Red Riding Hood or Wizard of Oz (Forest of Pipes?)
--Robin Hood
--Davey Crockett
--Phantom of the Opera/Hunchback of Notre Dame
--Legend of Sleepy Hollow/Rip Van Winkle
--The Odyssey (The Challlenge to the Suitors? The Sirens? Visiting Hades?)
--The Myth of Sisyphus
--The Iliad (Mechanical Trojan Horse? [And yes, I know the Trojan Horse is not in the Iliad])
--The Judgement of Paris? The Maidens of Hephaestus?
--Aesop's Fables (The Tortoise and the Hare? The Grasshoppers and the Ants?)
--Judeo-Christian or Christian mythology (Steampunk Creation? Noah's Ark? [Non-comedic] Crucification?)
--Steampunk Hamlet/Midsummer Night's Dream/Tempest/Lear (storm scene -- walking through the exhaust of an enormous steam engine)?
--20000 Leagues Under the Sea
--Cobbler and the Elves
--King Midas
--Daedalus and Icarus
--Narcissus and Echo
--Prometheus (Providing fire for steam engines?)
--Steampunk Ganesh
--Steampunk Hell/Hades/Four Horsemen (with half-dead mechanical horses?)
--Sodom and Gomorrah
--Orpheus
--Beowulf and the Dragon
--Steampunk Hydra
--Gilgamesh and Enkidu fighting a steampunk Humbaba
--Peter Pan
--Pinocchio
--Mad scientists (Frankenstein's too obvious, but there are others...)
--The First Men in the Moon
--The Goose that Laid The Golden Eggs
--Jack and the Beanstalk
--King Arthur (The Knights of the Cog Table?)
--Lady of Shallot
--Steampunk Court of Louis XIV? Louis XVI?
--Steampunk Atlantis (already done by Disney, methinks)
--Ashton Kutcher -- Steampunk'd!

I've also had the idea of a steampunk hearing aid, wristwatch, or Segway, though I don't think I could incorporate any of these into anything mythology-related.

Okay, I think I've narrowed it down to two possibilities:

--A mechanized beanstalk, with a Victorian Jack looking up in amazement in preparation of his climb.
--A Clockwork Sysiphus, with Sysiphus pushing an enormous cog, piston, or mainspring against increasing resistance.

Concept / pre-visualization: Initial concept -- Sisyphus

This is an initial concept for the "Sisyphus" image. The final piece will depict Sisyphus trapped in a clockwork Tartarus, attempting for all eternity to unwind a mainspring but doomed to fail repeatedly, thus powering a mechanism that counts off his attempts. Admittedly, this is more "clockwork-punk" than steampunk, but hopefully it falls within the bounds of the style.

This is a quick sketch done with an ancient version of Poser that came with a magazine. For the final version, I'll probably use ZBrush to sculpt Sisyphus, Maya and Wings for additional modelling, and either Indigo or LuxRender for rendering.

Here's a quick sketch for the Sisyphus concept. See my previous post for an explanation.

Nice to see I wasn't the only one with an abundance of ideas to choose from, making picking something to do hard!

I love the idea with the clock rather than pushing the boulder. Clockwork/Steampunk I think are pretty much the same genre, sometimes steam isn't the best power source.. then it's clockwork!

I know -- this challenge give artists a lot of material from which to choose. There is a lot of mythology out there -- Greek, Roman, Hindu, Judeo-Christian, Persian, Norse... I wanted to pick something fairly recognizable, but at the same time, I suspected that some of the obvious ones (Daedalus and Icarus, The Trojan Horse, etc.) would be chosen frequently. Hopefully Sisyphus will be fairly original, and at the same time fairly well-known.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, hopefully no one will get too bent out of shape over the distinction between clockwork and steam power .

Work In Progress: Getting started -- dungeon floor

Well, time to get started. To help me get the mood straight in my own mind, I figured I'd start with the floor of Sisyphus' prison. This was created procedurally with DarkTree Textures 2.51 and tweaked in Photoshop to bring out the reddish blotches -- possibly dried blood from the many times that Sisyphus has fallen when the mainspring snapped back.

Thanks, Glenn. I'm going to work on some of the mechanical shapes (the gears, the chains, etc.) next, and I'll post some more images soon.

Work In Progress: Modelling -- a gear

Here's an initial attempt at a gear. I'm still kind of playing around; I'm not sure yet whether this particular model will make it into the final image or not.

Some thoughts on gears

I've been thinking about the gears I'll be needing. Basically, I'll want to be able to increase or decrease turn rates by a factor of ten. It'll probably be best to do this in two steps. I'll therefore need three sizes of gear:

Size 10 gears: 30 spokes; radius 4.7746483
Size 3 1/3: 10 spokes; radius 1.5915494
Size 3 gears: 9 spokes; radius 1.4323945

To increase turn rate ten-fold:
--Size 10 gear turning at 1x
--Mesh with Size 3 1/3 gear turning at 3x
--Axial connect to Size 10 gear turning at 3x
--Mesh with Size 3 gear turning at 10x

I'll double-check the above when I'm more awake to make sure that it makes sense...
