a question about game models.

i am curious, does it matter if game models (or models in general) are one single piece of geometry.
ive modeled guns before, and found it difficult making it out of one piece of geometry (with high detail at least).
i looked at some models of team fortress via the model viewer in the source sdk. i noticed that the topolgy wasnt perfect, and it seemed like all the models were not made of one single piece of geometry.

so do models require one piece of geometry?

Most games use a model format that will look like this:

Object Name			GeoType
Scene Root			null object
	- Mesh1			poly mesh
		-mesh2		poly mesh
	- Mesh3			poly mesh

etc


Basically, as long as all the meshes end up parented to the scene root it's all cool.

Edge loops for none-organic and non-animated things really don't need a proper edge loop. In fact, in a game you could go as far as to say the edge system that produces the least number of triangles while maintaining shape is the best and correct edge flow.

i just always assumed models had to be one object (low poly models at least). so when ive modeled, i have always thought about how i could make a small item out of the mesh i already made. thank you for the response.

Here's an example:

Same object

Single mesh: 116 triangles


3 Meshes: 92 triangles
