Polys or Triangles???

When someone says such a model is XXXX polys, do they mean the amount of triangles its made of, or actual polygons? I use MAX edit-polys a lot so you can get many sided polys and this will reduce the poly count.

triangles

Hey Teacup, when someone says how many "polys" a model has, they usually mean triangles. Edit Poly in Max doesn't actually cut the number of polys down, it's just another way of counting triangles. Edit Poly lets you build in "quads" which are basically 2 triangles side by side. Everything reduces down to triangles no matter what.

Faces, no triangles or polys

be aware

If you work in 'editable poly' in MAX it the polycount tool will only count polygons, not faces.

just type q or a in your viewpoort, then you will see the faces count

Q only counts quads when in editable poly. In editable Mesh it will count faces.

Its pretty confusing though that Maya calls quads faces, and tris polygons.
