Another Anime with LW cel-shading

Stumbled upon this today while at the FX Break site, it seems all the fighter jets, some explosions and other background animations were made in LW by Gonzo Digimation, very nice work. They have a making of section on their site but even after babelfishing it, it makes absolutely no sense. Time to learn Japanese.

Here are two streaming Windows Media trailers:

Here's a link to the site:

It's kind of interesting that you bring this up. I've been looking at a lot of japane anime websites and behind the scenes stuff, and Lightwave is pretty much the de facto standard for digital cel shading. Every single major anime production company has Lightwave firmly integrated into their pipeline but you never hear about that. Why is that? This is something I would think Newtek would promote more.

I found Gonzo's web site http://www.gonzo.co.jp/ , I remember now that I saw these guys a long time ago on a bonus disk that came with the Lunar 2 playstation game, there was a little making-of video and they were using LW 5.6 I think, the CG was really bad in that game but they sure have improved since.

Hey Shade01, I agree- Japanese lightwave artists are soooo good yet most people outside of Japan aren't aware of the cool stuff these guys are making, maybe D-Storm can start doing profiles like Ben Vost and Proton are doing (with an english translated version, of course) That would be great!

oooh

Sentou Yousei Yukikaze(is the show the streams above are from) someone has good taste. Very good book too. Last Exile is a relatively new show from Gonzo as well and has some excellent Lightwave CG in it. This is also one of my current favorites as well =) the show is still airing and hasn't been licensed in the U.S. (or anywhere else that I'm aware of) i'm afraid so may be a while before some people will be able to see it.

http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/m-serve/last-exile/ click the "MOVIE" button has some rm streams you can check out=)

Takkun: If there is something you need put into english throw me a link in PM

asx is Windows Media Player stream file the actual asx file contains no real data aside from a reference to were the real stream is originating.

You can optionally open Window Media Player choose open location and input one of the URLs below.

For Makoto Shinkai's latest project you can check it out here http://mztv1.broadbandgw.co.jp/mangazoo/cloud_l.mpg (Warning This is 70mb!) Made with 100% off the shelf software. Lightwave/Photoshop/After Effect Premeire and 1 seriously motivated individual.

http://mztv1.broadbandgw.co.jp/mangazoo/cloud_m.mpg here is a 16mb version. (Lower Res still decent quality)

A previous work of Shinkai-sama was Hoshi no Koe aka A Voice of a Distant Star (done again completely by himself is now available in the United States on DVD) A blurb about it on 5.14.2002 was featured on Luxology's website as well. You can find the page on Luxology in the archived news on page 9.

http://store.yahoo.com/animenation/dvd-001.html more info on Hoshi no Koe and order. =) Also lots of LW in this=)

Makoto Shinkai's personal website. http://www2.odn.ne.jp/~ccs50140/ all japanese but you can still click around and look at the pretty pictures if you can't read it =)

If anyone wants to geek more over 3DCG/Cel Style in anime Studio 4șC(studio founded by Koji Morimoto director of Akira) does a lot however they're primarily Softimage 3D / Softimage|XSI based.

Some link to Morimoto and 4șC the site is in french I'm linking and some of the animations/clips are subtitled in french with english dialoge. 99% of the videos are in Real Video 9 format but are good quality.

Studio 4șC and Koji also produced 3 of the Animatrix videos. =)
