Z sculpting and Maya

I should know this but I find myself always confused on this matter...

I know that I model in Maya the rough mesh trying to keep my toplogy clean and mostly quads.

I know that I can now take this obj into mudbox or zbrush to add ungodly amounts of detail and really experience an organic modeling process...

What I dont know is the next steps to well.

In Maya can I see that mesh as it was in Mudbox...will I always have to control the low poly and only see my higer res version in the render view?

Are most of these renders of high detail amazingly awesome models rendered through Zbush?

Some clarity or a link to a tut that might explain this in laymens terms would just be jolly.
