Extracting Shadow Infomation through ray type nodes

Good morning, I have a question about other means of extracting a shadow. I have a shadow pass and for some reason, I keep getting artifacts...when I use the area shadows.




Here is a render of the proper area shadows with a ray type node (shadow set to green) with a lambert shader set to the eye port. Now what I want to do is separate the shadow pass to get something similar to the result in this link...

Is there a way to do this in XSI?
