In Render View, why is the image does not have the same quality after saving as jpg

After I render an image using Mental Ray - the picture are smooth and sharp in Render View, but when I save it as a jpg, the quality is no longer top-notch. It is of better quality when saved as a bmp. Does anyone know why or how I can have the same quality as in the Render View when save as an image?

An example is my avatar containing 2 boxes and a sphere. It's really sharp throughout, but my avatar saved as a jpg seemed to blur, especially when you look at the sphere.

Thanks.

thats because of the jpeg compression

smaller file size = bader quality

save your file as tiff or tga if you need it for an animation

if you need it for the web you could save it as tiff in maya and save it as jpeg in photoshop with the "save to web" feature, where you can see how the picture will look after the compression

Thank you both.

Setting AW_JPEG_Q_FACTOR = 100 in my Maya.env made it much clearer, although the jpeg still looks not as sharp as the original render by a hair. You have to look closely to spot it. My avatar now has the clearer jpeg.

Now I just wonder if it would be clearer than the original render if I set it to 300.

Thanks.

correct me if I'm wrong, but it's 100%, so setting it to 300 wouldn't help
