file size for prop modeling? and pros and cons for file types?

what does everyone recomend file size wise for background models/ props?

also what is the standard to using different file types? is there a reason to use a Tiff or a targa over a jpeg? (other then alphas?)

I don't think the file size is as important as the polycount / detail level of the model inside the file. Make your props have a sufficent level of detail for their use and distance to camera and the file size will be what it will be. If the file is going to be referenced many times, then it might be a conceren, but you could always make a low detail prop for distant objects and a hero prop for close up. That's my thoughts on the matter. At our studio, we use .iff files almost exclusively. They are smaller than tiffs and targas and can carry an alpha channel. They are not lossy compressed like jpegs and it's the maya native file type.
