I made this image with 3ds max,vray and photoshop.
@LAV:
You can achieve the same affect using different techniques:
One of them by using 3ds max particle flow:

But this tutorial needs Particle Flow ToolBox purchase which is out of my budget now
Myself I make it with Guruware Ivy plugin :

The other parts are bunch of splines.
Keep in mind that you need a lot of patient and you may end up with very very high poly count
