squeezing more juice!!

I origionally had this post over in the technical forum, but hopefully someone here can help me,

Need help on a speed issue. I'm running XP Pro on an Athlon 1200, 512 SDRAM, ASUS A7V133 MB, and a GeForce2MMX-400, and it runs pretty sweet i think, but sometimes when I'm working on a big file (+200Mb) in PS or Painter I need some extra juice. So I quit the explorer and just leave the app running, and WHAM! i get like a 20-30% speed boost. Just want to know if this is actully a bad thing to do? doesn't seem to have cause any probs so far.????

hahah no __a__ that's not a bad thing to do, the explorer is just a shell and you may have heard of shell replacements (other windows skins) so don't worry your pc won't be crashing any time soon

Hmmm, then you're doing something wrong frog. I've had to shut down explorer and restard it with the task manager (New task -> "Explorer") numerous times, when my relationship with 2000 hasn't been at it's best

But, indeed that's just a brilliant idea _a_... you get better speeds AND more stability, as explorer DEFINIETLY isn't some of the most stable parts of M$' OS:es... while ironicaly it's the part that we watch and use all the time

I was looking in "applications" rather than "processes"

Now I've tried I have to say it's a great tip!!!! Kill off everything other than Photoshop, kill Explorer and PS runs much better. You can then bring up the task manager to relaunch explorer once you want it back.
