Good video card under 500$ ???

hi. I am a student on a budget... is there a good video card under 500$ for use with 3DStudio Max 5 ?? right now I have a Gateway Pentium 4 with 512m rdram and a 64MB NVIDIA Geforce2 MX400 AGP...

I am making trees in the wind, and the computer seems to slow a bit. I am not sure that Ram will solve my problem.

thanks
michelle

If you are looking for a CAD video card, that may not be enough... but for a standard high-end (gaming) graphics card, you could get the...
  • ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB - to be released soon!
  • ATI Radeon 9700 PRO 128MB - $270
  • nVidia GeForce FX 5800 Ultra 128MB - $400
  • nVidia GeForce 4 TI4800 128MB - $175
Those are your main options.... check out the FX compared to the 9700 PRO.... the FX is much more money (its newer) but speed wise, im not sure how it compares in the department of 3D. Also, maybe instead of spending all that $500... get like a 9700 PRO and also 512 more MB of ram!
just my 2¢,
Cheers

Hi
I've starting looking sround for a new card myself to check prices. I found this site

http://www.thecadstore.com/videocrd_pny.asp

They have all the Quadro cards and at a resonably price. I called their 800 #, talked to a saleman.
He was very nice, helpful. He sent pdf's with price quotes. Take a look at their site or give them a call.

Last I time I checked..

Quadro4 700xgl - $325.00
Quadro4 750xgl - $385.00
Quadro4 900xgl - $535.00
Quadro4 980xgl - $545.00

Hope this helps.

[*]ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB - to be released soon![*]ATI Radeon 9700 PRO 128MB - $270

There are problems with the current Radeon cards in a variety of 3d applications. Max, Maya, and XSI all report issues, some documented on the company's respective websites.

I'd look towards another solution then a Radeon if your serious about 3d work. If your just a hobbiest, then it really won't matter too much what you choose.

]*nVidia GeForce FX 5800 Ultra 128MB - $400

Ignoring the massive noise level for the time being, the inflated price, and the lack luster performance....

Would you want a video card that does this?

[*]nVidia GeForce 4 TI4800 128MB - $175[/list]

Any of the Geforce4 Ti line work well in a variety of apps.

If your looking for more robust support, check out a Quadro4 750XL, they should be around the 300 USD mark.

This is scary Greg
Hopefully they will be able to fix it with updating drivers in the near future.

seems like the Quadro's are actually pretty cheap, I had this image of like $800 atleast...
guess not, but now, heres comes my question...

would getting a Quadro be a good idea if im into gaming? I heard some CAD cards dont even have DirectX supported!
Cheers

Quadro cards are just as fast as their Nvidia Geforce brethern in games.

I use the 900/980XL to play 1942 Battlefields all the time. Silky smooth fast with AA enabled .

Wish game designers would start creating font types designed for AA though...always screws up the ingame text.

I don't expect to ATI will hard work on DCC drivers in 2003. Maybe in 2004!

I know DCC is TM with nVidia

Scary? it's what killed mine. My sum total of technical support on the issue?

With the software that was having the problem : "it's a hardware problem, talk to the hardware copany"

from the hardware company: "It could be a driver problem."

from nvidia: *insert sound of not ever hearing a reply*

About the only thing it did right was die horribly before it was to late to return it to best buy without a hassle.

It was a nice, if noisy, card for all of about 20 days.

Whatever card you had, it had a warranty longer than the Best Buy return policy. Why didn't you get a replacement?
