Goblin, Sven Geruschkat (3D)

Title: Goblin
Name: Sven Geruschkat
Country: Germany
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop

I needed an object to test/learn mental ray, so I created this goblin bust a few weeks ago.
The tests concerned image based lighting with my own HDR-environment/background photos, sss-materials with displacement maps and ambient occlusion, blending of different materials and final gathering.
Well, I learned painful lessons about mental ray and I wish no more (bad) surprises.
I hope, you like the results. Enjoy!

Hi! very nice work! Great model, textures/shaders and lighting!

I have to ask, I've tryed the sss_fast_skin (I just love it) but I never got great results with the blurry reflections that comes with it. I might be wrong (I realy hope I'm wrong) but the only way to control the quality of it is by boosting up the Anti-aliasing but it still looks pixalated. But I see that you did not get that sort of problem, is there a secret way? Please tell me! It's the only thing that feels buggy about that shader...

Wow. The shaders look excellent. Great job! The style reminds me very much of Brian Froud's work.

Hi! Thank you all, for your kind comments.

"Yoda from hell" (ha ha)... Yes, this came into my mind too, while modeling. But it's more a coincidence. Although, I like Yoda and Brian Froud very much. So you know, where my inspiration came from.

The scene setup is mostly a HDR-picture taken for the background and a corresponding HDR-picture taken for the environment (Mirrorball). The brightness of the rendering is controlled via exposure control. Add some glow-effects and the composition is quite good, for almost no work.

@ olivierth

Concerning blurry reflections on the fast skin material, all you have said was correct. But it shouldn't be pixelated anymore. So I had to check for myself... Maybe this helps. (DOF works also like this...) (SSS isn't visible, because no FG)

Very nice, the one hiding behind the shelf is my favorite.
Did you design him yourself? The concept is just great.
