Mac guy building a pc

Hi guys. I'm building a new box on a budget. Here's my post in the tech/hardware forum: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53348

In the original post I said I'd be using Maya/Lightwave, but now that I think about it, I may just stick with Hash for my real work and keep plugging away with Maya PLE until I can afford to spring for the full version.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

J

Shuttle

I have two shuttles in the office now and I wouldn't hesitate to recomend them to anyone. Very quiet, small and packed full of nvidia goodness.

Hey SL,
I'm a mac guy that used a:m from time to time. I have since moved to Maya on a PC, about 3 months ago.

Got mine custom built at www.mwave.com

Cost me about $1,100 (included assembly of the pc) cause I wouldn't have the slightest clue of how to do it, since I'm a mac guy

short list of the specs:
cpu: athlon xp 2100
mobo: a7n8x deluxe
ram: 2x 256 ddr 2700 kingston memory
Video Card: gforce 4 TI 4200 128mb 8xAGP
HD: 80gig westerndigital 8mb cache

You could probably get this cheaper now, or something even better at the same price. That's how it is with pc's, wait three more months and you'll see

hope this helps,
George

you could also check www.newegg.com

Wegg,

Small world... we use one of the little black cubes in our kiosks at work.

So what did you get? One of the little ones or did you assemble a mini-tower from shuttle components.

Is the GeForce2 MX good enough?

What processor did you get? I'd like to be able to upgrade to much faster chip one day. Will these boards handle it?

I know - lots of questions. I haven't built my own PC since the 486 was all the rage.

thanks for the quick response!

We got the 41g before the 41G2s came out so ours doesn't even have the nvidia chipset. But these new ones look amazing. They can handle all the latest Athlon processors. There is an Intel version as well but. . . bleh. . .

The 2mx is more than enough for AM and Messiah but it has an AGP slot so you can put any card you want in there.

Since stability is often an issue, you can just go to the Hash site and match the companents listed as qualified hardware. This way your system will be exactly like the system used to beta test AM, and you won't have any hardware conflicts causing crashes.

oh. wait. ummnnn, April Fools.
It appears to be against Hash policy to give out this info, so you need to "talk to Steve to discuss it"

You actually had me going there. . .

I was like. . . "I don't remember that!"

Good one.

For the love of pete make sure you get an Nvidia card, ti4200 and above. Grgeons suggestion looks solid. Personally I went with a P4 for a touch less money then his build but a few apps I use thrive on SSE2 instructions that the Athlons didn't have at that time.

Scary that you can build such a powerful computer so cheap nowadays..more power!!!

Actually Wegg,

Many moons ago (we're talking right after AM99 came out) there was a question on the list about what hardware was good for AM and the hash guys responded that they used ATI stuff in the office so thats what works best with am, etc etc etc.

So mabye I've just found the root of the problem !! They were developing with those !@!!#$ drivers from ATI

well anywaay I do remeber , Steve I think it was, recommending ati

!!!!! please do not consider this a recommendation for ati their OpenGL support is still behind nvidia's (I too have heard they are improving though)
