HMC 8: Entry 2 - Han Solo - Bust

FINISHED ENTRY
Harrison Ford is Han Solo (Star Wars, 1977) by Paul Robinson

When I first looked over the list of celebs I somehow skipped over the fact that Han Solo was there, if I had seen it first I would have been doing it outright. But now I can do it as a second entry so heres my beginnings. This is being done on a "when I find the time" and "if I get it done" basis.

Its all rough as guts at the moment but I'm still trying to find the shape. Although I think there is a tiny smidge of a likeness in there somewheres.

REFS
They're not the best, but they seem to work together alright (second one is from TESB).

RENDERS

Lol....it kinda looks like my original Bruce mesh...

WIRE

mmmm....five sided polys......

I worked on the head some more, the likeness is starting to come through now

It doesn't have small details like the chin bump and things still need to be worked out, like the middle of his brow, but on a whole its starting to get somewhere.

now i know his forhead looks incredibly sloped but from the refs i've got it does seem to actually do that....lol

hey robo glad to see you started a second one... well neway... I think that the head needs to be rounded out a bit more... it is looking really cubey (yes I realize that I made a new word)... the side looks good but the front looks off... I don't really see him in the front..

happy modeling...

thanks matt, I know what you mean about the cubiness (another new word) and the front view.....the same thing happened on bruce, got the side view right but the front never quite looked right...lol.....i'll probably do a bit more on it tomorrow and try and sort both those problems out.....

i never thought I'd be crazy enough to start one model in an organic challenge let alone two...what is the world coming to....lol

someone hand me my humble pie...i need a few slices....

I was looking at some Mudbox stuff today (and ZBrush 3) and thought, after all my "opinions" on the use of MB and ZB, that maybe I should at least try and learn it. So I decided my Solo model was the best place for me to get the hang of things...

Last time I played with Mudbox it was a shaky experience, I was doing everything manually (no hotkeys) and it seemed a very slow and clumsy process....so today I made sure I checked out what all the hotkeys were and tried to settle in a groove....

I mostly used SoftB, Scratch, Smooth and move....they seemed to be the handiest, and I finally got the hang of working with my tablet in 3d and brush scaling etc etc.

In no time at all I was whizzing around in MB vastly improving my model and I thought "I'm going to look so silly...eating my own words like this"....lol...so it's safe to say any prior comments are retracted..

right...ramble over, now for the new Mudbox'd pics.

I didn't want to bother myself with displacement maps at the moment so I just exported the level 3 mesh straight into MAX.

still needs work, mainly with details and such, but I'm pretty chuffed with how its come out....and its kinda making me think about doing a MB pass on Bruce.....

lookin much better... now all you need is to give him some ears... lol...

keep it up...

Old 04 April 2007   #7
thanks matt, he has his ears now...

however I had to export a lower level mesh and take it back into max to do the ears.....lol...havent got that much of a handle on mudbox yet...so when I brought it back I had to resculpt a few things but I actually think it looks a little bit better...

progression

np... does he have another ear? I assume he does... neway yeah I think it looks really good now the likeness is really good

keep it up...

Old 04 April 2007   #9
lol....yeah he does have another ear....thanks for the confirmation on the likeness...

next task is the hair.....hmm....

Old 04 April 2007   #10
okay the hair nearly killed me (plus I just panicked as this site died while i was replying...lol)...it's not overly great but I'm okay with it....i also made facial adjustments, mostly detailing the eyes and fixing the cheeks...

i've decided that this bust will be Han in the Stormtrooper armour, mainly because I can be bothered attaching a body and then rescultping everything again...lol....this is a rough start at this...but its unfinished and I don't like it much so I'm going to start again on it...

and since that shouldn't take too long and theres still 2 weeks or so left in the challenge i might be able to spring a third entry.....lol....maybe.....i might go have a look at the list...

well I had plenty of time last night as I watched the cricket and I managed to get Han finished off as well, I actually think this one turned out better than my Bruce one likeness-wise.

Han's looking awesome! Nice work! Bruce is pretty good, but I think you came closer with Han to a likeness.

Old 04 April 2007   #13
thanks Kraken, agree with you totally about bruce

You've come a long way, Paul. There is a definite likeness to Han in that model and I think you've got the face down pat. A few tweaks here and there, and you should be all set.

Also, this site might benefit you greatly.

There are loads of Han Solo references from A New Hope that can help with perfecting the model.

Keep up the good work!
