auto no-flip knee - non axially alligned chain

Hey people,

Im currently working on an autoRig mel script that incorporates the non-flip IK knee. Everything works fine when the joints are axially aligned, however if any joint in the leg chain is off-axis everything goes to shit.

I've been reading through 'The Art of Rigging' and there's a paragraph in it which details a simple method to offset the ik handles twist attribute by eye using a duplicate of the leg chain as reference. However im trying to automate this process within my autoRig script.

Does anyone have any ideas on a logical way I could automate this allignment process?

Thanks

ok got something....

Basic work around using dummy locators and an aim constraint to work out the offset angle. Not sure if this is the right way to go about it, any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi guys. Haven't visited this forum for a looong time and then I stumble upon this thread.

Like Talama76 posted, I've (I'm mrwiseguy on fahrenheit forum) written a script that calculates the offset for you. Open the mel-file in a text-editor for help on how to use it.

Cheers

no flip ik of art of rigging is crap
never hack the twist offset, let this attribute animable

try to reverse engineer the knee of tsm (setup machine) it is pretty interesting, but ultra heavy and painful in this autorig
it is made with smart use of aimConstraint and driven key

A better No-Flip Knee method

I find this is more stable then the art of rigging method. Just try it out.

You can always make another attribute that can animate the twist. I do use the twist-attribute for the no-flip knee, but I set an attribute called twistOffset and have an attribute animatable called twistIK or whatever then set twist = twistOffset + twistIK. Simple as that
