PS3 games priced at $59.99

Sony's online store lists seven games for next-gen console at just under $60, including one first-party title.

By Tim Surette, GameSpot Posted Sep 26, 2006 1:55 pm PT

Gamers have known about the price of the PlayStation 3 since E3 (except in Japan, where the price was recently cut), but the costs of the system's games have been up in the air. The cat may be out of the bag now, as the online Sony Style store now has listings for seven games, all priced at $59.99.

Shoppers can now preorder Ubisoft's Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Activision's Tony Hawk Project 8, Call of Duty 3, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Full Auto 2: Battlelines, as well as Sony Online Entertainment's Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.

The pricing of Untold Legends may reveal what future PS3 owners feared--that first-party games would retail for the same price as third-party games. Microsoft currently prices new release first-party games for its Xbox 360 at $49.99, $10 cheaper than the $59.99 tag on third-party games. First-party Wii games have also been confirmed to sell at $49.99.

"Japanese news site Impress Watch has suggested that the cost of Japanese PlayStation 3 titles will range from ¥8,800 ($75) to ¥9,800 ($84), an increase attributed to rising development costs.

The
Random Tracking editorial, from respected Japanese journalists Munechika Nishida and as translated by website IGN and others, quotes “multiple information sources” for the figures, which have not yet been announced by Sony Japan.

If true, the price increase would mark a significant increase from the average PlayStation 2 game price in Japan of ¥6,800 ($58), although the lower figure is on par with high profile PlayStation 2 releases, such as from the Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy series.

Japanese game prices can vary considerably across even a single format, depending on the title. Higher profile games, such as the recent Nintendo DS title Final Fantasy III, are often sold at an increased price. Similarly, Xbox 360 titles Dead Rising and Lost Planet will be priced at ¥8,379 ($72) when they are released - ¥1,000 to ¥2,000 ($9 to $17) more than usual. Tecmo’s Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 will be sold at an even more excessive ¥9,240 ($79)."

Yeah, I always love it when I hear people in the states complain about the price of a $50 game. Europians get screwed more, last I recall.

Sony Style, Sony's own digital catalog/online shop, lists US launch games at $60.

I think this will be very specific to the Japan market. If those prices were to go globaly we're talking $100 in Sweden, but as of now retailers are at $75 (including very high VAT etc), and that's the same as XBOX360. Is anyone suprised why the Swedish gamers are screaming their heads of in joy because of a region free console?

i don't think its unexpected to be honest, development costs have risen whereas the actual price of games hasn't risen much. Hopefully ps2 games will be about £45-£50....but we'll see...Europe does pay alot more than the rest of the world when it comes to consoles and games.

they better make those games longer then,

it annoys me when I buy a game and finish it in 4-5 days at the hardest level,
if those games are 80$ they better make those games longer to finish.

I'm a little surprised Sony isn't giving a "break" to the Japanese gamers. As much hype and fevor as there is surrounding the market over there I guess I just assumed they would have cheaper games there. Although, I do remember with my 2 years in Korea that electronics (even made in Korea) seemed to be more expensive than stuff you would buy in the states. *shrug*

These prices are going to make me seriously consider doing game rental services, like Gametap. I betcha your gonna see more of these types popping up soon.

What's wrong with a short game so long as it's good? Seriously. I would prefer a company make a short game that's incredible rather than "lengthening" the game by reusing areas and geometry or creating annoyingly long fetch quests.

I mean, seriously. God Of War, ZOE2, Contra, Onimusha 3, Katamari Damacy, Twisted Metal Black, Starfox 64, and the list goes on. I'd gladly pay $60 for a great game I'd want to replay more than a 100+ hour quest in tedium that I'd never touch again once the credits roll.

And I may have posted this before...

I second this. As much as I hate game rentals there is no way I can buy all the games I want to play with that kind of prices.

Particularly launch titles. That goes for most consoles.

See how long those prices last stateside. If it's more than a month, Sony just lost the entire continent. I don't really think they'll be able to pull it off on this side of the Pacific. My prediction is some good news about pricing from Sony for the US/Europe in the near future. That, or they're doing with this what they did with the core console price: aiming high and then bringing it down shortly before launch to make people feel like it's a better bargain.

*Edit*
I originally posted the above when Japanese prices were quoted and converted to $75+ for stateside; I assume $59.99 will stick.

People were/are complaining about $60 games for the XB360 - SONY better not dream about charging $75+ for games that will probably be no "better" than what the XB360 can do, or else they will be waking up in a cold sweat.

If they are any more expensive than XB360 games, it would be more proof of SONY's arrogance.

New XBOX360 games retail for AUD$120, (inc. tax) which is the equivalent of USD$90.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me $100 is a psychological monetary barrier when it comes to paying for games. I refuse to pay $100 for a game.
