Altitude and slope-dependant ecosystem populations?

I am tearing my hair out, because I'm trying to do something I assume is very easy to do, but I can't seem to find a way to do it.

I want to create an ecosystem forest that gets more and more sparse the higher the altitude of the terrain, and the same when slopes get steeper.

I've tried using a greyscale bitmap of the terrain to drive the variable density, I've tried playing with function nodes, read the manual, etc. but to no avail. So I was wondering if there is anyone who could explain to me how to do it.

Mixed materials is the easy and good way to go. One material "Ecosystem", the other "non Eco" and then altitude dependant.

Thank you. That worked great, finally I can make the animation I've been wanting to make.
