Intel To Slash Prices Up To 60%

Quote:
"Intel Tells Customers It Will Cut Prices by 60% to Gain Share
June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Customers of Intel Corp. said the world's biggest computer-chip maker plans to reduce prices on Pentium processors by as much as 60 percent to reclaim market share from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Executives at Micro-Star International Co. and Gigabyte Technology Co., two of Taiwan's biggest makers of circuit boards for computers, said Intel officials told them the price cuts will start July 23. Tom Beermann, a spokesman for Santa Clara, California-based Intel, declined to comment. "

Is that 2006 or 2100? But seriously, when is it?

I might be upgrading/new system at about september/october time and it would be great to have some reduction in what it will cost!

The real question is will it reach the OEM market or is this just for redistributors (dell, gateway, hp, etc...)

Apple has hardly ever reduced prices that fast. They usually just buy faster CPUs and put those in for the same price...

Hahahah

'Upto' probably means 60% off the lowest/out of date chips, I suspect.

The slashing is a result of low availability of Conroe, and the fact that Conroe is so much better than Intel's previous offerings. They have alot of Netburst cpu:s left to sell, and since nobody would buy them at the previous prices this is their only way. You'll be able to get some really good deals depending on what kind of box you're building.

For quite a while now...Itanium has been 64bit ever since, and the Pentium 4/D and even the Celerons now have EMT64 instructions as well. In fact, the Pentium D 805 is a dual core 64bit CPU for ~$130 (depending where you buy it), which IMHO is currently the best bang/buck ratio if you don't mind its energy consumption.

Is there a good site somewhere where you can compare different system benchmarks side by side ?

Well that would be great cause i haven't updated for 3 years now ( Still with a p4/2.66)

BTW i'm so sick of the hangups of single processors. I'd rather get a dual. Any dual Intel motherboards yet? Or has dual core replaced dual for good?
