Microsoft Releases MechCommander 2 Source Code

This is the Shared Source release for MechCommander 2. This release contains all of the source code and source assets required to build MechCommander 2. This release can be used with the Microsoft XNA Build March 2006 CTP."

My understanding is that shared source is a look but don't touch arrangement...
Please correct me If I am wrong

I do like that range they give in the download size. Anywhere from 9 K to 1 Gig.

does that mean that MC:2 is now free of charge? you can get the game for free (since you can compile your own version with the source, can't you)?

I think they are simply shareing the assets for the game in order for developers or game design students to examin how they approched makeing the game.

I guess it whould be entirely possible to combine all the assets together, but I'm not 100% if they whould allow all that documentation to be released for obvious reasons.
