How'd they do that

Help! I am doing some work for an instore Kiosk for BestBuy and I was asked to do something very similar to the latest commercials that are out for them. I don't want to copy it but just get a similar look and feel. It seems that the commercials were made using 3D and a compositing program like AfterEffects. I have 3D Max and AE 6.5 but I am at a loss and don't know where to begin.

Here is the company's website that did the commercials: http://eyeballnyc.com/

Oh and here's the real kicker - I have to have a final video by Wednesday next week!

I pray that the CG gods give me incredible effects capabilities and that I can pull this off.

Looks like an extensive use of masked and mirrored 3d-layers, keyed footage, alltogether well matched to the music.
Til Wednesday, huh? So you better stop praying and start working instead. turn off the sound, as it adds a lot to the clip, start intersecting one clip into its cuts and analyze it. It's well done stuff, but not very hard to achieve.

Heh, sorry but I think you just shot yourself in the foot.(i only say that because I speak from experience) By Wedensday? I hope you don't need any sleep. I look at those ads and say hmm production team of fifteen to twenty plus most likely a few weeks minimun per ad.

Like was mentioned keep it simple and you maybe able to do something...

I would try and do all the work in AE, you will certianly exponentially complicate it by trying to add 3d elements (simple one sure ok) you've got to think building elements, animating, and rendering (rendering alone could take you 20-30 hours, your looking at 900 frames for a 30 second piece at approx. 2 minutes a frame, if your lucky) then comping with your 2d elements in AE...

Suz,
If you need help drop me a note:

Besides the 3D, which as said before could take an entire day to render, there are alot of AE 3D things going on. Of course you're not replicating the commercial, but building a kiosk UI with a similar look and feel. If you take out the dancing robot you'll cut your work down by 75%. Everything else can be done using 3D space in AE.
