This Russian site has four links to what appears to be 3DS MAX 5 Sreenshots.

Unhappy

Same here... did anyone manage to save them, or saw them and can find them in their Internet Cache ? If so, can you post them here ?

Here, I managed to snag this one. I had to resize to meet the 50000 byte max for an attachment

Not too exciting, but here's the splashscreen they had.

My analysis

OK, looks like nothing much has changed on the surface from what I can see here.

Snap tools have been copied up to the top, they Animate section has changed a little (big Key button, little buttons under the drop down box...) The Render to Texture dialog box thats up must be a "texture baking" kind deal, whilst the other one that says "Global Raytrace Settings" speaks for itself.

HOWEVER there's one small weird thing I noticed:

Look at the top, the "contour selection" box is toggled on... but at the bottom the "contour selection" is toggled off...

and whats that button at the top left ? Looks like a little box, to the left of the Undo button...

Also notice that the Array dropdown is no longer between the Align and Mirror buttons... perhaps its been put in with the align tools... who knows.

Noticed the "Character" menu at the top between Modifiers and Animation ... ?

Then again, this whole thing may be fake or a work in progress GUI...

On the splashscreen:

hmph, I wonder what the keyboard layout on the splash screen is all about.

some of the settings there seem to be exactly the same as FinalRender (reflect/refract material ID & most of the texture baking things) - I wonder if some of the fR raytracing code is being used...

Well I guess we know what the code name is for this then now and that it more than likely wasn't with Discreets blessing

c'mon guys! am I really the only one who thinks these are fakes???
Just look at that splash, it's such a cheap ripoff from the current one, and as chris said, these settings look exactly like FR settings.

Re: My analysis

I alluded to the fact that it may be a fake:

Also, max3d.com has posted the rest of the screens since the russian site is down...

What I really want to know is... in the upper right hand corner of the screens, something has been erased with a size 5 white photoshop brush... I wonder whats being blocked out here... could be any number of things.

from what i remember. max always looked a bit different than the previous one. from the icon toolbar. to the extra buttons. and other interface changes. this doesnt really look any different than 4.0.
and 5 ...from what i heard will be a huge jump.

Not very nice Photoshop work!!
Itīs so clear that IS NOT 3DSMAX 5 !!!

Do you think Max5 will have the same start picture than max 4 but with a rotten dam keyboard?
Remember that max 4.2 allready has a different start up picture!!

Discreet takes care of itīs image more than that!!!

There's no doubt that they may be fakes and discreet definately takes better care of its image, but as I said, these could be work in progress screens without the new interface. I hope we're all wrong and that these are in fact fakes, because I'm as excited as everyone else to see something completely new, like A|W PA to Maya, or LW 5 to 6, or Soft3D to SoftXSI... instead of having everything shuffled around (even if that kind of jump is supposed to be for Max 6... new versions like that breed instability, and I can't see Max getting any less stable, in my opinion... I hope thats one thing they worked on for Max 5).
