Kate Balfe design/modeling reel

After three years in the vancouver 2D animation industry, This is the product of my return to school (VFS). Though I focused on modeling, I couldn't completely throw off the shackles of my animation background and I decided to tell a story with my models.
I used Softimage XSI to make these models, as well as Corel Painter IX and Photoshop to texture. All of the textures are hand painted, with the exception of the flower pattern on the woman's dress and the vector work in the title screen, which I drew in flash.

Then I composited like crazy in After Effects, using about fifteen layers in each scene. and here you have it.

I love the Moth and the colours in your reel Kate! You have put so much work into the sky and the environment too and we don't really get to see the breakdown of it, which I think is a shame. Still it's beautiful

Wow... like the music? I wasn't too sure of it myself, but it's there now.

I had a version of the reel with all the breakdowns but I didn't do a slick job of it and in the end it just seemed too long. In hindsight, I would almost have put it in instead of the rotations.

thanks for all your comments, appreciate it much.

How's the poulet, brendan?

Heya Kate ~ Your work is such an inspiration. I love your style and the mood of your demo reel. So peaceful and wonderful. No matter which area you focus in (2D vs. 3D), your work will always be great. You are such a talented artist, and it was really great getting to know you and becoming your friend. We have to stay in touch girl! Don't lose track of me! hehe, anyways, good luck on pursuing a new job in 3D, you'll do great!

much love,
