Creating smooth particle trails?

Not sure if I put this thread in the right section but...Im looking to create something like this with particles in XSI:

You see this sort of thing everywhere. I imagine it requires some coding/scripting (storing the last position, etc.) which is ok, but I have no idea where to start...

any help appreciated

I would recommend searching the internet on "fractal flames". There is some freeware out there that generates it... of course, it is 2D so I'm not sure that it will be able to interact with whatever you are trying to do in XSI correctly. If the 2D isn't a problem you should be able to import the flame images onto some flat geometry and have it appear in your scene, or you could render out your 3D and composite the flames onto your animation in After Effects or another compositing app.
It doesn't have to *be* right... it just has to *look* right.
