Mesh vs. Poly?

I was curious when you guys use Editable Mesh and when you use Editable Poly. I read an article a while ago about the exciting differences between them, but it didn't really sink in. Do you guys use one or the other, or both? Do they have their own specific purposes in the course of your work, or is it just a matter of preference? I'm not really sure if it is better to switch back and forth, or just choose one and go for it. And I certainly don't understand all the differences and their importance.
Thanks for the help, I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there looking for the same information. Even if they didn't know it.

Hey Gilgamesh, I always use editable poly, I like the workflow with meshtools+cspolytools, and if you get the epoly2, it allows you to shift/pull the edges like you would in e mesh. I have found that for me, this seems to give me the exact results I want. So, this is my answer to your question, hope it was informative.

This article is pretty good at explaining some differences, but it doesn't cover everything. It was written right after MAX 4 came out I guess. Anyway, this is all I have really read and understand, and I just wanted to find out some different takes from you guys. I have never really used polys in the course of my learning, but I want to start paying more attention to keeping a model quadrated for meshsmoothing. I assume polys help with this, but it obviously isn't a complete replacement of editable mesh, because editable mesh is still around. So from all of this I gather that they both have useful features. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Editable mesh is more efficient right now.

The plus to Editable poly's that they more advanced and all of the main 3d packages use them for bas modeling......

i often use editable mesh simply because you don´t have to collapse the stack to add an edit mesh modifier. Everytime you want to use the polytools you have to convert it to an editable poly. No edit poly modifier available that you could add to the stack like edit mesh.

I mostly use edit poly (meshtools), because its really fast. never could work without it. but sometimes i switch to edit mesh, if i want to extrude an egde or weld some vertices. welding vertices dont work with edit poly sometimes.

i think that the reason why editable mesh is still available in max4 is that you can load older max scenes. it's the same with multires and optimize. in further max releases editable mesh and opimize propably will be removed. like in editable mesh you can weld vertices in editable poly with the meshtools script as long as they are connected with an edge.

I still use the editmesh because of the easier way to turn the edges.. hope they'll fix that in next version, there is still interesting stuff in poly (cap for example, and integrated meshsmooth) but man! you can't work with this retriangulate thing.. boring!!
